An all-encompassing rain forest.

Tropical bird songs float through the air, as thunder rumbles in the distance. A South American paradise? Close. It's a Midwestern rain forest!

Once again our third-graders have become totally immersed in a two-month-long investigation of the tropical rain forests. This study becomes the epitome of cross-curriculum as they chart rainfall, make maps and give reports on animals and their habitats.

A ceiling-to-floor rain forest is constructed in the school's commons area by making cardboard carpet-roll trees, and colorful paper vines, leaves, flowers and rivers. Blue roll paper covers the ceilings and recessed lights, creating a cool, clark, restful atmosphere. Tapes of ...
