Feb. 25--As the populations of the United States and the Inland Empire have grown, people need, or at least want, more space. And an industry has exploded to let them lock up their possessions outside of their (presumably cramped) living quarters.
One in 11 U.S. households currently rents self-storage space. That's an increase from 1995, when one in 17 used self-storage space.
According to Andy Hyde, of the Self-Storage Brokers of America, the number of self-storage buildings nationwide more than doubled from 23,000 in 1994 to 47,000 last year.
About 3,000 new sites opened last year in the $21 billion self-storage ...
