Feb. 26--Joseph N. Smith, a retired telephone company employee and Army veteran of World War II, died of complications from renal cancer Thursday at Stella Maris Hospice. He was 80 and a resident of the Mercy Ridge retirement community in Timonium. Born and raised in East Baltimore, Mr. Smith was nicknamed "Boots" from an early age. He graduated in 1944 from Mount St. Joseph High School, where he played soccer, ice hockey and baseball, and later was inducted into its Hall of Fame.
