Among Oregon lobbyists, Paul Romain is about as big-time as they come. It says something that Romain traveled to Eugene Tuesday night and attempted to persuade the City Council not to increase the municipal gasoline tax by 3 cents per gallon. It's clear that the gas station owners and fuel distributors Romain represents are worried about the emergence of a patchwork of local gasoline taxes. The concern is legitimate - and if Romain and his clients can successfully push for a uniform, statewide gas tax increase, cities such as Eugene could afford to back off.
