Feb. 27--LEXINGTON -- VMI is known by many of its graduated cadets as a wonderful school to be an alumnus of but less delightful while one is actually a student.
Guard duty at 3 a.m. on a February night or an encounter with an overbearing upperclassman during the rat line, the indoctrination period for first-year cadets, must at the very least be considered challenging. Substantial portions of a cadet's life on post are typically not viewed by outsiders as enjoyable parts of a conventional college experience.
So it was startling to hear Matt Murrer, one of three seniors on the Keydets basketball team, use the word "fun" recently ...
