TRAFFIC police in the West Midlands today warned things were about to get tougher for thousands of motorists still using mobile phones at the wheel.
Last year, more than 4,500 people were issued with pounds 30 on-the-spot fines after being caught using a hand-held phone while driving.
But from today, the fine will double and motorists will get three points on their licence.
If a driver chooses to challenge the fine or the case ends up in court, penalties include a discretionary disqualification and a maximum fine of pounds 1,000.
