Feb. 27--COTTONDALE -- Groundbreaking at Green Circle Bio Energy's 225-acre wood pellet plant site takes place today near Cottondale, but J.D. Barnes remembers when the tung oil industry, not wood pellets, was Jackson County's biggest industry.
As a boy, he worked in the tung tree groves near Round Lake and Compass Lake between 1949 and 1950, picking the crop for 9 cents a bushel, Barnes said. The oil, obtained from the seeds of the trees, is used chiefly in quick-drying varnishes and paints and as a waterproofing agent
"Back then, that was the only thing in this area going on besides the fertilizer plant," Barnes said.
