The Valentine's Day storm that dumped more than 30 inches of snow on parts of the Adirondack Mountains was one of the three largest snowstorms to hit inland areas of the U.S. Northeast since 1940, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm, which struck the upper Midwest Feb. 12 before moving into the Northeast on Feb. 14, was classified as a Category 3 - or "major" - storm on the weather service's five-tier Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale, which considers the amount of snow and how many people were affected by the storm.
