On Jan. 31, after returning from a visit to Iraq, the new speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, called the situation there "catastrophic" and said, "The question is: How many more lives do we have to lose to prove that the president's plan is not working?" But when National Public Radio's Renee Montagne asked, "Then why are more troops in Afghanistan the answer?" the California Democrat said that the situations were different. True enough. Afghanistan has been unstable for much longer than Iraq, has much more difficult terrain, heavily armed warlords, and a history of fierce resistance to the presence of British, Russian and now NATO troops.
