Mar. 2--If an unusual and little-publicized referendum passes March 20, Clayton County residents could see their property taxes go up.
Clayton County voters can decide if they want to keep a local option sales tax, a penny-per-dollar levy on groceries, clothing, cars and every other item sold at Clayton businesses.
If the voters boot the sales tax, $49 million in yearly sales tax revenue will disappear. Even referendum supporters admit property taxes would have to rise to make up the difference. Opponents, such as Lake City Manager Jerry Garr, predict taxes might have to be doubled or tripled.
