Give us a break... we're not all Rigsby; Market Watch: Why small landlords worry about new rules stopping them holding tenants' deposits.

It's a law that either gives long-overdue protection to tenants or is yet more red tape for the private rental sector, depending on your point of view.

From next month, the UK's 850,000 private landlords will no longer be able arbitrarily to refuse to return any or all of a tenant's deposit at the end of a tenancy.

Instead, money taken upfront by landlords will be protected and a new dispute resolution service will ensure that tenants don't get ensnared in Rigsby-style scams.

But small-scale landlords have rounded on the proposals for introducing yet further regulation into the lettings business.
