Today, real estate property and asset management firms are fighting a battle over where their critical applications should reside. Mini- and mainframe computer systems have traditionally been used for centralized processing of month-end statements and other critical business operations. Such larger computers off-load these tasks to the central processor and allow users to continue their other work during processing.
However, minis and mainframes are expensive to buy and difficult to operate. They lack the flexibility of desktop PCs and the easy communication of local area networks (LANs).
