Mar. 4--The girls basketball season began in an unfamiliar fashion for Greg Mayerhofer. While recovering from heart surgery in November, Mayerhofer took a brief absence as Floral Park's coach. He described himself as a "cheerleader" in a season-opening nonconference loss to Glenn. Three months later, Floral Park's players and supporters became the cheerleaders. Floral Park's fans chanted Mayerhofer's name as the fourth-seeded Knights put the finishing touches on a 42-35 win over No. 2 Great Neck South Saturday in the Nassau Class A final at C.W. Post.
