Mar. 4--Following the lead of rival PNC, National City Bank will roll out tomorrow a new line of checking accounts offering rebates to customers hit by ATM fees.
A handful of large regional banks are using the tactic as a way to stand out and retain customers. PNC was among the first big banks to launch a free worldwide ATM offer in September.
Slashing ATM fees for certain customers "seems to be sort of the new wave," said Greg McBride, financial analyst at Bankrate.com. "We may see more regionals jump on this bandwagon."
