Integrating the family into the camp experience: exploring the impact of residential diabetes family camp.

In 2002, the total annual economic cost of diabetes was estimated to be $132 billion (ADA, 2005). An increasing number of adolescents are being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (ADA, 2004) and families appear to play an important role in adolescents' diabetes self-management. Inadequate support that leads to poor diabetes management has been shown to lead to problems at school and home to include aggression, antisocial conduct, anxiety, depression, kidney failure, stroke, nontraumatic amputations, and death (ADA, 2004; Bryden et al., 2001).
