Standard Life declined 14 per cent of critical illness claims in the first quarter of 2006.

The company paid out AGBP9.8m in 184 critical illness claims from January to June, but said it was disappointed with the level of declined claims.

Of these, Standard Life rejected 8 per cent of claims because the patient had not made a full disclosure of their medical history at the time of the application.

A further 6 per cent of claims were rejected because the claim did not meet policy definitions.
