Nintendo's Wii outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 in January in the US, according to the NPD Group.

Sony may take consolation that the total sales of its gaming consoles exceeded Microsoft and Wii, but it has to be disappointed that its PS3 is in fourth place, considering the much-ballyhooed next-generation technology like the Cell microprocessor and Blu-ray high-def DVD drive.

Lack of availability was a barrier to PS3 sales in December, but most retailers now have them in stock.
