Abstract
Insights from ethnomusicology and psychological anthropology suggest a new perspective on the flute players mentioned only by Matthew at the wake service of a twelve year old girl. This paper was read at the International Meeting of the Context Group at the Pontifical University of Salamanca, Spain, July 2006.

In redacting Mark's report of Jesus' interaction with the dying daughter of a synagogue leader (Mark 5:21-43), Matthew alone mentions the presence of flute players in the house (Matt 9:23).
