Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005)
In 1968, Chisholm became the first African American woman elected to Congress. She represented the state of New York.
Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968)
King was a leader who worked to gain equal rights for all Americans. He was the first and only African American to have a federal holiday in his honor.
