MEXICO CITY -- Inauguration day was a study in contrasts.
As Ernesto Zedillo, flanked by the papal nuncio -- but not the local archbishop -- took the oath of office Dec. 1 in an elaborate ceremony in ornate settings, some 35,000 poor and hungry people gathered in protest miles away. At the Monument to the Mexican Revolution, they demanded justice and an end to what they called "Zedillo's illegitimate regime."
Meanwhile at the Chamber of Deputies, Zedillo, the victorious PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) candidate promised a government of justice, law and honesty.
