Commentators and journalists have dubbed it "a sleepy oasis", the new "Kingdom of Arafat", and the "capital of Palestine". This is Jericho.
After a 45-year exile and an equally long struggle to create the state of Palestine, it appears that it will be in Jericho where Palestinians will create the first foundations of what they hope will be their own sovereign country.
