Most people leave acne break-outs behind them as they grow out of adolescence.

But many cope with the problem well into adulthood.

So why do some have to put up with pimples in their 20s, 30s and beyond?

Hormones play the lead role in causing acne at all ages, said Dr. William Patrick, a dermatologist based in Fayetteville. There appears to be a genetic predisposition for acne, as well.

Acne can present itself in various forms and for various reasons, depending the individual. It responds to a variety of treatments, also depending on a person's unique situation.
