Mar. 9--Technically, an operetta is defined as "a little opera."
In practice, it is a stage musical form that falls somewhere between the more studied classicism of opera and the more popular, modern style of the stage musical. Historically, composers include Johann Strauss Jr., Franz von Suppe, Gilbert and Sullivan, Jacques Offenbach and, in more modern times, Sigmund Romberg, Victor Herbert, Franz Lehar, Rudolph Friml and Jerome Kern. While the genre is not often performed these days, Puebloan Patti Gallagher and friends will offer a wide selection of such music in her three-day "Musical Notes" show, March 23-25. The ...
