NEARLY 600 council chiefs were paid more than [pounds sterling]100,000 last year, according to a study.

Twelve of the senior executives raked in more than the Prime Minister while five earned in excess of [pounds sterling]200,000.

Homeowners meanwhile face above-inflation rises in council tax later this month.

The figures were obtained by the Taxpayers' Alliance through the Freedom of Information Act.

The pressure group's report revealed that the number of bosses earning six-figure salaries in 2005/6 rose by a third from 425 to 578.
