NEW ORLEANS _ This city's relaxed, easygoing attitude long ago earned it the nickname the Big Easy. But its laid-back demeanor historically has served as a facade behind which lurked another New Orleans _ of pistol duels and brutal slavery, of rampant crime and ethnic feuding, of illegal drugs and political corruption.
Now, with the city fully into the holiday season, the magnificent gnarled oaks that line stately St. Charles Avenue are festooned with lights, and the rollicking French Quarter bars are bursting with merriment.
