LIVINGSTONE was found in the heart of Africa by Mr Stanley, I presumed. But I was wrong. Stanley wasn't his name. It wasn't even his name by adoption. Nor was he American. Nor did he utter the famous greeting - he made it up long afterwards.
Everything I thought I knew about Henry Morton Stanley was wrong. It is put right in this major biography, subtitled 'The Impossible Life Of Africa's Greatest Explorer'.
Most of all, it contradicts Stanley's undeserved reputation as a harsh, ruthless killer of natives without compunction on his African journeys.
