HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, who had been second favourite for the Stan James 2,000 Guineas behind Teofilo, has been retired to Coolmore to replace George Washington, who has been experiencing fertility problems in his first season at stud.
It is understood he has already covered his first mare.
The future remains uncertain for George Washington, last year's Guineas hero. Coolmore will persevere with his stud career, but the news opens up the fascinating prospect of his returning to the racecourse.
