Mar. 11--Results from a recent Mercy Health Center study confirmed my suspicions about just how well nurses deal with caring of patients they know will never recover. Let's just say they hide their emotions well, caring for strangers every day with expected compassion and professionalism.
But underneath it all looms enormous anxiety when those patients are dying. The Mercy study, which included 151 nurses here in Oklahoma City and conducted in conjunction with 183 nurses at a hospital in Hangzhou, China, found that apprehension about dying is universal.
