In her recent exhibition "Land of the Sun," Carole Benzaken continued her engaging exploration of the dominance of visual culture in structuring the contemporary human condition. The show of work from 2005-06 featured 20 large- and small-format paintings, videos and drawings, the latter on translucent supports collaged together in lightboxes. A resident from 1997 until recently of image-riddled Los Angeles, Benzaken here cast a critical eye on her native France and its unflattering colonial past in Africa and the Caribbean.
