Glencoe, Illinois, has celebrated its 125th anniversary as a village, the 80th anniversary of its council-manager government, and the 40th anniversary of its successful combination of police and fire safety operations. As Glencoe's public safety director, I was pleased to acknowledge the 40th anniversary event at a special recognition ceremony in January 1994.
The original idea for combining Glencoe's police and fire services came from the village manager in 1953.
