A high proportion of hair dyes sold on the European market show skin-sensitizing properties'. In other words, these substances can cause an allergic reaction among people sensitised' to the product if they are exposed to it again. That is the verdict of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP), made public on 12 March. The committee advises the European Commission on the harmlessness of consumer products. Of the 46 substances studied, ten proved to be extremely sensitising,' 13 strongly sensitising' and four moderately sensitising'.
