Mar. 10--Fifth-graders at Eugene Field Elementary School have experienced science in a way no textbook could touch

On Friday, they got their hands on real eyeballs, hearts, brains and lungs, courtesy of a group of third-year medical students from the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa.

"We've learned from statistics that students after the fifth grade -- especially young girls -- tend to lose interest in science," said Michael Thambuswamy, one of the medical students who volunteered for the special program. "That's such a shame, because some of the most amazing doctors we've been on rotation with are females."
