The heart of the book is an analysis of various Byzantine icons of the Transfiguration from the 5th to 15th centuries, that is, roughly from the period of St. Catherine's monastery (Sinai) to Rublev's time. Andreopoulos approaches icons not only as Scripture "in colour and symbols," but more importantly as theological interpretations of biblical events.
