With the Legislature's approval in hand, Shrewsbury town officials can begin searching for a new police chief without the encumbrance of the Civil Service process. A special town meeting voted for the change, and lawmakers gave it the final OK last week.
The person who will replace Chief A. Wayne Sampson, who retired on Sunday, will be considered an at-will employee under contract with the town.
Shrewsbury has hired its police chiefs under the state Civil Service law since 1928. The change, requested by Town Manager Daniel J. Morgardo, was intended to speed up the process to fill the now-vacant position. Had it remained ...
