SPENCER - The fire department's 1983 ladder truck is no longer certified, and while it can still respond to fires, it is in danger of becoming unusable at any moment.
The American LaFrance, with its 100-foot-long extension ladder, needs parts that are no longer being made, and a stopgap approach to get the vehicle certified for a year could cost as much as $20,000, Fire Chief Robert P. Parsons said. He believes the time has come to replace it with a $975,000 tower truck paid for by a debt exclusion that would be charged to taxpayers only until the vehicle is paid off.
