Looking for some information on the town of Barre, I did an Internet search and found to my surprise that two of the three people listed as notable residents of the town were African-Americans: Quacko Walker and Quacko Walker Lewis.

Quacko Walker, according to the listing, lived in Barre all his life (1753-1812), sued his owner for freedom and won emancipation for all slaves in the state in 1783.

Quacko Walker Lewis (1798-1856), born in Barre, was a noted black abolitionist, Masonic Grand Master of African Grand Lodge No. 1, and Mormon elder.
