This slim and elegant book has the virtue of introducing a new (or at least partly new) classificatory hypothesis for thinking about world religions. Originally trained as an economist and a major figure in an earlier stage of the Czechoslovak government until imprisoned for unacceptable views, the author has taught for many years at Lancaster University in England in the field of comparative history. Of his many books, Before the European Challenge: The Great Civilizations of Asia and the Middle East (SUNY, 1990) provides much of the analytical data for the current study. The Human Predicament is an articulate distillation of a long life of scholarship and reflection.
