Conditional log-linear models for analyzing categorical panel data.

Alternative approaches to the analysis of panel data called conditional log-linear models are used to predict sequences of categorical response. These include Markov models, independence models and distance models. The method is advantageous because quality of prediction is measured using a logarithmic function and conditional probabilities of responses consistent with the model are chosen to obtain the smallest expected penalty. Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth is used to illustrate the predictive power of the method.
