COLONIE - Every year, more than a thousand dogs are surrendered to shelters around the Capital Region.

But they don't always go straight to their future owners.

Under Homeward Bound, a volunteer not-for-profit dog rescue organization, dogs are placed with foster "parents" until they're ultimately adopted.

"I want to make sure these dogs go to good homes," said volunteer Joe McCormick, 32, of Clifton Park, who aids the dogs with his wife, Jen. They own two of their own.

"It's wonderful to see these dogs go out."
