With the sun blazing down from a nearly cloudless blue sky and sockeye salmon slipping out of our way as we cruise down giant Iliamna Lake, we begin to grasp just how big and wild this region of Alaska really is. Iliamna, which is situated where the 49th state trails into the Aleutian Archipelago, covers more than 1000 square miles--about the size of Connecticut. Accessible only by boat or float plane, this remote region includes Alaska's first designated trophy trout area, and attracts more wilderness recreation than any other area of the state.
