Mar. 15--DES MOINES -- Today is semifinal day at the boys state basketball tournament for Class 1-A, 2-A and 3-A teams, and since Tri-Center, my alma mater, is in the semifinals, it seems like the right time for a confession. Tri-Center's last semifinal appearance was in 1986, my senior year, and I popped the video into the machine a few days ago so I could recap the situation: We're leading Iowa City Regina 60-56 with 5:43 left in the game. One of my teammates, Brian Witt, is fouled near midcourt. We're in the bonus. Witt is a decent free-throw shooter, but not great, and I'm a good free-throw shooter (75 to 77 percent maybe?). ...
