With 15,000 hotel rooms, 85 golf courses, 600 tennis courts and 10,000 swimming pools, there's not much doubt the Coachella Valley's primary industry is tourism. It always has been, and most likely will remain, the area's primary source of revenue.

But there are other business activities there, as well, and local officials have learned in the last few years that an economy can't live on suntan lotion alone.
