Finding cause for celebration in world events of the last five years--a period of conflict, destruction, deception, and assaults on civil liberties--is not easy. But a measure of hope has emerged in the flourishing of voices of protest throughout the arts, including the cinema--the cataclysm seems to have roused many filmmakers out of their passivity.
