The Land

Botswana is a landlocked tableland bordered by Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Running roughly parallel to its eastern border is a plateau, about 1,300m high which divides the country into two distinct sectors.

The narrow eastern sector, which contains Gaborone, Lobatse and Tuli Block, is the most fertile area and is home to 80% of the population. Altitude varies greatly in this area, with a proliferation of hills, valleys and rocky outcrops. The area also contains both the highest point in the country, Mt Otse (1,489m) and the lowest point, at 503m, near the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers.
