Although manufacturing only accounts for some 6% of GDP, it is the one sector which has the most exciting prospect for growth. It forms the central plank of the Government's strategy of diversifying away from dependence on cattle and minerals.
Manufacturing also carries several very attractive socio-economic advantages. It provides employment and training opportunities to Botswana's increasingly well-educated workforce, it ushers in an era of sophisticated technology, it reduces dependence on imports and it provides seemingly endless scope for growth.
