This stimulating, lively and highly-readable new book presents a reliable report about present day realities and prospects in the five republics of ex-Soviet Central Asia. As a Pakistani journalists and writer for the Far Eastern Economic Review of Hong Kong, Ahmed Rashid has made many trips to the region in the last years from his home in Lahore. He conveys very well the contemporary trends and challenges facing the region, while not hiding the aspects which he finds disappointing or disturbing.
