Mar. 15--For years, Ecology & Environment's failed shrimp farm in Costa Rica was a major drag on the Lancaster-based environmental services firm's profits. That finally changed in the second quarter, as the $553,000 gain that E&E booked from the $2.5 million sale of the shrimp farm helped the company nearly double its second-quarter profits, the firm said Wednesday. The gain more than offset a 6 percent decline in E&E's profits from its continuing operations, which were hurt by higher expenses as the company bid on more alternative energy projects and absorbed greater business development expenses.
