Mar. 16--Prune summer-blooming clematis. Those that produce a late spring/early summer flush of flowers and intermittent blooming through the summer should be pruned at least 18 inches below the highest nodes with swelling vegetative buds; prune lower if desired for shaping.
Those that begin to bloom later in summer or early fall should be pruned severely -- 8 to 24 inches from the ground. Clematis that bloom in one great flush in May should be pruned after flowering.
