Mar. 16--Food City founder Jack C. Smith died Thursday at his home in Abingdon, Va., after a brief illness, the company announced.
Mr. Smith, 81, opened an 8,800-square-foot Piggly Wiggly store in Grundy, Va., in 1955 with financial support from family members and oversaw its growth into a 95-store chain covering portions of three states.
"Jack Smith was a man of great vision and possessed great wisdom," said Jesse Lewis, Food City chief operations officer and senior vice president.
