In 1920 a contributor to Tbe Atbenaeum wrote: 'When a Slade student applies the word "good" to Piero della Francesca's Baptism, he means that it reminds him of things he has seen at the New English Art Club.' It was a perspicacious, if somewhat extravagant, comment, intended to show how completely the New English had come to dominate the early decades of the century.
